Oongoonorr – Indian Ocean Craft Triennial – Garry Sibosado

In 2021 Artforms was approached by the organisers of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial to work with indigenous artist, Garry Sibosado, on his artwork for the exhibition in the John Curtin Gallery, at Curtin University. Garry is based in Lombadina on the Dampier Peninsula, in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Garry’s work, Oongoonorr, is made from 155 shaped and polished local pearl shells, some of which were decorated with carvings. Powder coated aluminium swirls, a single piece of carved Australian ebony and zirconia completed the artwork. It is a representation of the Milky Way, as seen in Lomadina.
