Noongar Moieties – January 2020
In 2020 Kylie Graham was awarded the opportunity to design statement pieces for the entry to the Aboriginal Cultures Collection in the newly renovated WA Museum – Boola Bardip.
Her design consisted of two busts, one of a Noongar man, the other of a Noongar woman. The concept was to express the deep relationship between Noongar people and their totems and the significance of skin groups or moieties. These moieties guide marriage and relationships.
The female bust depicts a cockatoo totem rising from the mind of the Noongar woman. This bust is carved from white granite.
The male bust depicts a crow totem, similarly rising from the mind of the Noongar man. This bust is carved from black granite.
