Kwibuka – Rwandan Remembrance Memorial

Overview

In 2023 Carol Stevens and Artforms WA were contacted by the Rwandan Community Abroad Perth Inc. to assist in the design, fabrication and installation of a lasting memorial in remembrance of those killed thirty years ago in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.

The sculpture is entitled ‘Kwibuka’, meaning ‘To Remember’, and is the first to be erected in the Asis-Pacific region.

The memorial provides a place for the Rwandan community in Perth to gather, reflect and commemorate the lives lost to genocide.

The Kwibuka Memorial is made from pure black granite. It features laser etched text and stainless steel flames incorporating the themes ‘Remember, Unite, Renew’.

The memorial was installed in Civic Gardens, City of Stirling in time for the unveiling in May 2024.

Artforms WA supported four other small WA businesses in the fabrication, delivery and installation of this artwork.
